I started reading The Master Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg last Wednesday and finished on Friday. It was a very quick read just like the previous two in the series. If you remember I read The Paper Magician (the first in the series) and then read The Glass Magician (the second in the series) as soon as I could, but had to wait until June for The Master Magician to be released.
I almost wish these books were just one long book instead of a three book series because the first book really sets up the story for the following books. They make a lot more sense if you read them all together. I loved them all. They follow the apprenticeship of a paper magician named Ceony Twill. She is sent to apprentice for a magician named Emery Thane until she is ready to take her magaician’s test. I loved the idea of a paper magician and thought the spells and all the descriptions were very interesting. I also felt connected to the characters right away and was eager to find out just where Ceony’s and Emery’s relationship was headed. Although it’s about her apprenticeship and their relationship, it also explores how not all magic is good and what happens when magicians choose to use their magic for evil. Very interesting.
The third book picked up where the second left off and I was happy with how it concluded. I highly recommend this series. There are a fast fun read, especially if you are fascinated with magic and if you enjoyed The Night Circus (although the magic in these is much different than the magic in The Night Circus).
