I am so not on a reading kick this year. I think it’s because I’ve somehow chosen all the wrong books.
I just finished Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple last night and I have to say I don’t get it. I do not understand how it was such a “runaway bestseller”. I haven’t read any of Semple’s other books, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I thought it was kind of boring and I didn’t like a single character. Bummer.
It’s a story about a washed-up architect named Bernadette, her daughter, husband, her neighbor and her husband’s admin. Long story short. Bernadette (who everyone thinks has gone crazy) disappears in the last half of the book and no one can figure out what happened to her. It took me forever to finish this, but I had to finish it to find out if the ending was worth it. For me, it wasn’t. I didn’t really find it all that interesting and I really didn’t think it was funny. I didn’t have a single laugh out loud moment like I have with so many other books.
Bottom line. I would not recommend this book to my friends. However, there are millions of people who would disagree with me, so if you think it seems like it’s worth reading, go for it. Maybe you’ll love it. If you do, could you please email me and explain it to me. Maybe I just didn’t get it. Hopefully my next book is better.
