My husband redesigned my photography website and I’ve decided to add this blog to it instead of having a completely separate blog, so now I’ll be sharing all of my sessions with you here. I’m starting today with my own kids fall session. I took these at Lauritzen Gardens and am so happy with how they turned out. Although I will say that Hudson was so into posing for me this time because that meant he had to stop playing his real life Super Mario game with daddy. Harper however was totally into it.
Our weather has been amazing the past two months and we’ve been enjoying as much time outside as possible. We’ve done all the traditional autumn activities that make fall so perfect; apple picking, baking bread, visiting gardens, buying pumpkins and gourds at the farmer’s market, eating (too many) pumpkin donuts, going to the park, visiting the pumpkin patch, playing in the leaves and chasing sunsets.
I’m sorry for the radio silence over here. I have been away from blogging for awhile trying to adjust to our new homeschooling schedule. I honestly thought it would be easier to blog while homeschooling. I was so wrong. I spend so much time working with the kids, coming up with crafts, going on adventures and really just connecting with them more that I run out of time every day. But it’s awesome. I love the freedom that comes with homeschooling. We have spent so much more time outside this fall. And being in nature is a huge part of our lives. It’s something we’ve wanted to incorporate into our children’s lives since the day they were born. We’re all much happier and more content when we can get outdoors.
We are still figuring out some of our curriculum. So we’ve been adding a little at a time and easing into the whole new lifestyle. It’s going really well so far. I can’t complain. Hudson has responded well to the change. He seems much more relaxed. We all are. So far it has exceeded my expectations. I know they’re be a lot of bumps along the way, but I’m certain that we made the right choice.
Enjoying the heat while I can but
Celebrating the arrival of a new season
Feeling ready for football, changing leaves, flannel, blankets and pumpkin everything.
Starting to drink tea at night again.
Reserving all the autumn and Halloween books from the library for the kids.
Looking forward to lots of fall crafting. I think I may finally attempt my first quilt.
Decorating the house with autumn colors: acorns, pine cones, pumpkins and garlands.
Lighting candles every night. My favorite right now is cinnamon roll.
Cutting lots of zinnias from the garden to bring inside.
Continuing to bring in tomatoes and basil from the garden.
Freezing what we can’t eat so that we can enjoy it this winter.
Planting some spinach and romaine in hopes that we’ll be able to make some fall salads.
Adding some seasonal and holiday garlands to my Etsy shop soon.
Reading Looking For Me by Beth Hoffman. I’m liking it so far.
Listening to Apple Music. It’s awesome.
Watching Fear The Walking Dead. Obviously.
Planning a mini getaway for October.
Making new friends and it’s so nice.
Figuring out our homeschooling routine one day at a time.
Hoping to have some visitors this weekend, but I have a ton to get done before then so I better get to it all.
I wanted to do a photo shoot in front of our garden before the end of summer, so we did a quick little shoot one night before dinner. This did not involve a lot of planning but I think they turned out great. The backdrop behind the garden isn’t the prettiest (our grill, the ugly chain link fence) and I tried to hide it as much as possible, but that’s our yard so we should remember it that way. The important thing is that the lawn and the garden look awesome. So green! I wish the zinnias looked the way they do now, but at least you can see a few of them. I got that awesome blanket at the Goodwill a long time ago. I’ve been waiting for the right time to use it and this was the perfect occasion.
The sun decided to pop out when we were taking our family photos with the timer. This was the best out of all of them. I look tired, the boys are all washed out and Harper looks like I just grabbed her and threw her on my lap, which I had. But that’s okay. It’s real life.
I have really loved this summer but I have to say I’m ready for a new season and fall is, as you know, my absolute favorite.
Phew! The past week and a half has been a little crazy. There weather has been pretty amazing so we’ve been getting out of the house a lot. We’re trying to enjoy it as much as possible because even though it’s only the end of August, winter will be rearing it ugly head before we know it. We also ended up applying and starting homeschooling. But I’ll talk more about that later. Anyway, here is my WITL recap of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I’ll be back to my regular posting now. : )
Friday, August 7th
This little monkey came walking into our room around 6:30 and wanted some snuggles. I can never say no to that request.
Then is was back home to eat lunch before I took the kids back to Michael’s to get a Mario mushroom that Hudson wanted so badly.
Hudson talked Daddy and Harper into playing real life Mario Kart with him. Even though this shot is blurry I love it. You can see that Harper and Jeremy are laughing and following along behind Hudson.
My parents were on their way down for a visit so after dinner we went home to wait for them. I was not good about taking photos today. I kept forgetting about it and then taking more back to back. It’s not ideal, but I can work with what I did capture.
Saturday, August 8th.
Whenever my parents are in town my dad goes to pick up donuts for breakfast. It’s his thing and the kids love it.
Everyone was ready for lunch by the time my mom and I got back home so we went to B&G Tasty Food. It’s one of my parent’s favorite lunch spots when they come to town.
They also have this amazing quote on the wall.
After that we went downtown to the Old Market to check out a few more shops. Hudson really wanted his picture taken in the Old Market Passageway. In fact those wet spots on his shirt are tears because he didn’t think we were going to take it in the right spot!
We went home and my mom and I had to run to Target for a few things. Then I made dinner for the kids before heading back down to the Old Market for dinner at Nicola’s for our anniversary. First we had drinks at Blue Sushi while we waited for a table at Nicola’s.
We watched tv and talked for a while and then it was off to bed.
Sunday, August 9th
It was my final day of documenting and I did a very poor job of taking photos. I always feel like I’m taking more than I actually am. I’m a little disappointed with what I ended up with for the day, but I’ll make it work. At least I got something.
Before my parents had to head back to Sioux Falls my mom and I went to Kohl’s. She wanted to buy the kids some new tennis shoes as a back to school gift. They needed them desperately so it was perfect.
After they left we went and got coffee and then drove out to the Outlet Mall to Gap. My sister sent me a 40% everything coupon that was only good that day. Jeremy and I both need some new clothes. We found some stuff we liked and got it for a great price. While we were there I caught Harper singing and shaking her booty in the mirror. I got a video too. It was so cute.
We saw Dr. Tom at the mall. If you’re from Nebraska or like Nebraska football then you know what a big deal this was. I would’ve waited to get a picture with him, but it was super hot out.
I recently ordered a subscription for this magazine and I love it. I think it was $6 for a year on a FB advertisement.
Hudson’s obsession with Mario continues. He drew all of the characters and he and Harper play games with them.
They ate dinner while watching Curious George Halloween on Netflix. They think it’s hilarious.
Hudson starts school tomorrow so I set out his clothes and his name tag they gave him to wear.
Then it was bath time .
And time to brush teeth before stories.
And there you have it. Our Week In The Life recap. It was a very ordinary week for us. Perfect for documenting our everyday lives. Now I need to put my album together!
Today I’m sharing my Wednesday which was actually documented on August 5th instead of this week.
I noticed that I didn’t seem to take as many photos today. And it was pretty obvious that Harper was hanging out with me while Hudson was downstairs with Jeremy most of the day. I also realized that I didn’t get one photo of Jeremy downstairs working which bums me out a bit. Next time.
One of the first things I do every morning once everyone is up is make the beds. I’ve always been a big bed maker. I like it when my (our) rooms look tidy. Plus it feels so much better to get into a made bed at night for some reason.
Then I make breakfast and coffee. Always coffee.
I recently bought myself a new phone case after having the same one with broken corners for three years. I love Rifle Paper and got this one on clearance for $8.50. I still love looking at it. So pretty.
It didn’t take long before toys were drug out all over the living room. Hudson played with the cars on his mat for about five minutes before asking if he could go downstairs and play Mario. Harper ended up spending about 30-40 minutes playing with it though.
Then she went outside with me to harvest some basil from the garden.
Since it was Hudson’s last week of summer break we decided to take the kids to Pizza Hut for lunch. It’s not our favorite, but the kids like it and they like trying to win stuff out of the claw machine. They didn’t have any luck today though.
Because the claw machine was a bust, we took them across the street to the Dollar Tree to pick out a couple of things. Sometimes that’s all it takes to make their day.
When we got home Hudson asked if he could watch Mario videos on YouTube. I said he could watch one. Harper likes to watch them too. I love this photo. It’s a perfect representation of their relationship. Sure they fight and argue, but mostly they are best friends and love spending time together.
I went out to water the flower pots which I had forgotten to do in the morning.
I feel like I’m always doing laundry or emptying the dishwasher.
After dinner we all went for a long walk around the neighborhood. Hudson wanted to ride his balance bike, so Harper had to bring her baby and stroller along.
Then it was back home for baths and getting ready for bed.
I absolutely love summer and am so glad to be capturing our routine this summer. This is such a special project.
These are my Week In The Life photos taken on Tuesday, August 4th.
Then the rain started.
Every morning I take my allergy pill and my gummy vitamins and drink a full glass of water before I do anything else.
Jeremy had to go to Ace Hardware to get a mouse trap so he asked if I wanted to go along too and grab a coffee on the way.
The kids really wanted to play in the “river” at the end of the driveway when we got home. It’s one of their favorite things to do.
Today for lunch I had leftover salad from last night and read more of my book.
I worked on some photo editing while the kids played downstairs.
We decided to grill dinner again tonight and when you grill and it’s hot outside, you drink a beer.
The kids were playing so nicely together while Jeremy and I got dinner ready.
The perfect summer meal: Grilled burgers, sweet corn, and watermelon.
After dinner we took the kids outside to ride bikes. This photo is a favorite for sure.
He wanted to show me how you’re supposed to wash your face.
Bedtime stories with daddy.
Our tv obsession at the moment is Supernatural. When we started watching it on Netflix I had no idea there are like 10 seasons. We’re never going to finish!
This is how we watch tv in bed.
It was a very uneventful Tuesday. Very typical of what goes on during the summer.
As I mentioned before, I did my Week In The Life two weeks early because I wanted to capture our summer instead of a week during the school year since I just did that last October. If you would like to learn more about Week In The Life click over to Ali Edwards blog here. Here is a look at our Monday which was actually August 3.
I always open the kitchen window first thing in the morning if it isn’t too hot or humid outside. I love having that fresh air flowing in. It’s my favorite way to start the day.
Harper got right down to playing. She usually does.
My morning coffee in my favorite Goodwill mug. Archer Farms coffee with vanilla Coffeemate creamer.
I went outside to take my weekly garden photos and found that one of the zinnias finally bloomed. Very exciting for me.
I took the kids out front to play with chalk and ride bikes before the heat set in. We were out there for about an hour. Then they got hot and thirsty and wanted to go inside for drinks.
I left the kids at home to play (since Jeremy works for home and didn’t have any meetings) while I went on a quick Target run to grab a few things before lunch time.
I came home to find Hudson playing the Super Nintendo. My parents gave it to us a few weeks ago and he is loving Mario Kart and Super Mario World.
Lunch today was a chicken sandwich, chips and watermelon. Oh it was really good watermelon too. I usually try to read a bit while I eat my lunch. Today it was Poser.
The kids like to eat their lunch in the living room while they watch cartoons, which is fine with me because that’s really the only time during the day that they get to watch anything.
I got an email saying that a book I put on hold at the library was ready, so I ran to get it quick. The library is super close to our house. I also grabbed some movies while I was there. I love the library.
I started to prep dinner a little early because I had lots of chopping to do for salads. And I had to toast the pecans.
Jeremy finished with work around 5 and came upstairs. I put him to work grilling the chicken for our salads.
We had one of our favorites. It’s a blueberry chicken salad with goat cheese and toasted pecans. Delicious. I realized after I took the photos and we started eating it that I had forgotten to add the goat cheese.
We decided to treat the kids to Dairy Queen for dessert. They were excited. We had to eat it in the car so it wouldn’t melt too fast.
Jeremy taking out the trash just like every other Monday evening.
Reading bedtime stories. I forgot to take photos of the bedtime routine tonight, so I did more of that the next few days. I typically read to Harper and Jeremy reads to Hudson. The boys have a little routine that they like to do. Sometimes we switch it up though.
I didn’t take any more photos the rest of the night. I was super tired and ready to relax so I ended up in bed early just watching tv. Then Jeremy came out of Hudson’s room and joined me. Monday nights are always pretty lazy.
